The Fleet Science Center again gets in on the action at the pop culture, science fiction and fantasy event of the year, Comic-Con International: San Diego 2023. The Fleet’s involvement with Comic-Con underscores its mission of connecting everyone to the power of science and meeting communities where they live, work and play. Fleet Panels Two thought-provoking Fleet panels dig into relevant societal topics. Ambassadors from the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) IF/THEN Initiative, which includes participants in the Fleet’s New Science exhibition, will participate in the panels. Ms. Marvel and the Power of Representation explores how the television series, whose protagonist is a Muslim-American girl, makes strides toward changing worldviews. Panelists will discuss what it means for Muslim-American girls to see this representation, tapping into ideas of inclusion and intersectionality. In addition, panelists will delve into the specific realm of diversity and inclusion in STEM fields. The seven panelists bring expertise from the realms of data science and aerospace to biophysics and neuroscience—and insights from their lives seeking and finding representation. Thursday, July 20, 10:30 a.m., Room 29CD Dr. Evil, or Scientists as Villains in Pop Culture investigates why we find scientists portrayed as villains in popular culture. Panelists will shatter some stereotypes of the evil scientist and explain why this trope actually is much less likely in reality than in fiction. The expert panelists will discuss ethics, motivations, and what scientists really want us to understand about them and their work. The five panelists bring not only their expertise in STEM but also their extracurricular interests, demonstrating that scientists are people who want to make the world a better, more just place. 22nd Annual Paper Theatre Festival: It's the Smallest Show on Earth! UC San Diego Library’s 22nd Annual Paper Theatre Exhibition is now showing at The Nest, in the lobby of Geisel Library. Visit often, as the colorful, miniature theaters will be populated with different sets, characters and plays throughout the run (June 1 through August 15.) Currently featured in the main exhibit case: campus artist Carin Wallace‘s Paper Theatre Pageant-Play Paper Dolls. Her paper actors are based on the earliest homeowners and business entrepreneurs who were part of a vibrant Black La Jolla in the late 1800‘s and early 1900‘s. Free performances of paper theatre plays are featured at noon on July 26 and July 28 at the exhibit site in The Nest in the Lobby of Geisel Library at UC San Diego. These small live shows will be done in the informal, fun style of the true Victorian roots of Paper Theatre: families re-enacted plays they had seen at local theaters, in miniature, utilizing souvenir posters kits they bought at their theater gift shop. Lots of cutting and pasting was involved! Noon on July 26: Black Pioneers of La Jolla: A Pageant Play Celebrating La Jolla’s Earliest Home-Owners and Business-Owners, 1890-1930 (featuring the paper dolls of artist Carin Wallace and narrated by Rachel Almodovar.) and also: Count-Down to a Space-Walk (featuring the fanciful other-worldly paper dolls and set-pieces of artist Ioana Patringenaru.) The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep presents this pastoral romantic comedy, "As You Like It", as its next student production that will tour to three different outdoor venues in three different cities - Admission is free! Banishment, forlorn lovers, a sardonic fool, an even more moody pity party in the woods… What better set-up for a comedy?! Find out why “All the world’s a stage” and share in the celebration of family reuniting, past wrongs forgiven, and love, at last, won by all. “I like this place, and willingly could waste my time in it.” Director Benjamin Cole is proud to present this emotional roller-coaster for four sets of couples as they attempt to cure their love sickness or allow themselves to fall fully head over heels while still taking time to philosophize about the beauty of nature versus the ridiculousness of courtly manners. “I love the annual tradition we have established in North County San Diego of offering free live student Shakespeare performances in these outdoor venues,” Cole explains. “Each of the venues gives our students unique opportunities to expand their acting skills, and further their understanding and appreciation of both Shakespeare and the incredible outdoors we have the privilege to visit,” he expounds. Assistant Director, Steve Smith adds, “The cast of As You Like It is one of the most talented groups we’ve had at the Theatre School, but even more importantly, they’re tremendously supportive of one another and excel in collaboration. There’s something for all theatregoers in this show: characters who are lovesick and characters who are sick of love, hilarious clowns and heroic figures, battles of wit and a wrestling match.” The show runs a pleasing 90 minutes with no intermission and hopes to inspire a greater acceptance of each other and our places in this world.
