About 60,000 people took to the streets of downtown San Diego on Saturday for what organizers are calling "No Kings Day, a nationwide protest of President Donald Trump's policies.

Tanya Aguiñiga is the 2024 Longenecker-Roth Artist in Residence at the Department of Visual Arts, UC San Diego. Tanya Aguiñiga was born in 1978 in San Diego, California, and raised in Tijuana, Mexico. An artist and craftsperson, Aguiñiga works with traditional craft materials like natural fibers and collaborates with other artists and activists to create sculptures, installations, performances, and community-based art projects. Drawing on her upbringing as a binational citizen, who crossed the border daily from Tijuana to San Diego for school, Aguiñiga’s work speaks of the artist’s experience of her divided identity and aspires to tell the larger and often invisible stories of the transnational community. She founded AMBOS (Art Made Between Opposite Sides), an ongoing series of projects that provides a platform for binational artists. She was recently awarded the Latinx Art Forum: Latinx Artist Fellowship (2022), Heinz Award (2021), and an Americans for the Arts Johnson Fellowship for Artists Transforming Communities (2018). From the organizers: Join one of the Ilan Lael Foundation’s Visiting Artist Program (VAP) Fellows in an exciting afternoon of art and culture: Saturday, November 23rd from 2 p.m. - 3:30 p.m. at Union Hall Gallery. At 2 p.m., Visiting Artist Fellow Karla Cordero will host a poetry reading of her work juxtaposed with the work of VAP Fellows and the late James Hubbell’s in a unique ‘poetry conversation’. Tyler Grant is a National Flatpicking Champion and renowned guitarist, singer, songwriter, storyteller, producer, and educator. His adventurous career has spanned the better part of thirty years, and has taken him from his roots in East County San Diego to sideman to bandleader and from young hotshot to mentor in the bluegrass, Americana, and jam band scenes. His sixth solo release, Tryin’ To Have A Good Time, captures the image of a life-long wanderer staking out musical roots which extend to a canopy of song, inviting the listener into a home long sought after. Tyler founded the Cosmic Americana band Grant Farm® in 2010. After five albums, a collaborative release with Fruition (the celebrated Meeting On The Mountain EP), eleven episodes of the Meeting On The Mountain LIVE Broadcast®, and hundreds of concerts and festival sets around the United States, the band called an indefinite hiatus, seeking new directions during the “Great Pause” of 2020. Those new directions included becoming a river rafting guide and hosting musical raft adventures. When not on the road, the stage, the river, or keeping up with students on ArtistWorks, Grant spends most of his time in Colorado and California, searching for that perfect combination of song and story, and practicing the heck out of his guitar. www.tylergrant.com Opening for Tyler, Travis Oliver is an acoustic guitarist, singer, and songwriter who specializes in flatpicking guitar and roots music. Currently based in Ocean Beach, he was raised between the mountains and swamps throughout the southeastern United States, taking in musical influences along the way. Those influences include Doc Watson, Tony Rice, Reno and Smiley, The Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, and Phish. He began learning the art of acoustic roots music at an early age and spent many years honing his musical voice and style. As a tenth generation Appalachian, he comes from families rich in musical heritage, like his cousin and International Bluegrass Music Hall of Fame inductee Arthur Lee “Red” Smiley. Introducing "The Unfair Advantage." Australia’s leading sleight of hand specialist Harry Milas lifts the veil on the world of card cheating in an intimate and unprecedented theatrical event. During this hour-long experience, Harry will reveal the secrets behind the skill that saw him become a security weapon for the world’s top casinos. Join Harry in an audience of just 35 people as he reveals – step by step – how magicians, card cheaters and mentalists fool the world. Expect part performance, part tutorial as Harry exposes many of the best tricks and illusions he knows. He’ll start you off easy, but as the show goes on, greater displays of card play unfold and exciting secrets are uncovered… Before participating, you will be asked to sign a legal contract of confidentiality. Please bear this in mind when electing to take part. Audiences will meet their host at the Potiker Box Office at La Jolla Playhouse, and be escorted to a backstage location to sign the contract and commence the experience. Without Walls (WOW) is La Jolla Playhouse’s signature performance program that takes art outside traditional theatre walls and into unique spaces, including the annual WOW Festival and WOW stand-alone productions.
