Instructor Tracey Herriot will introduce students to skills that can be used in all of your future sewing projects. New sewing techniques will be taught each week and when to use them. Sewing techniques include: installing zippers, hemming pants, pockets, Hong Kong seams, how to sew a sleeve (set a sleeve) using different textiles, and much more! Build your own sewing portfolio! All materials provided. Note: there is a material fee for this course. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome!

Join instructor Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. An Additional Supply Fee of $10 (cash only) is due to instructor at the workshop. It includes pre-fused adornments plus jewelry findings for up to 3 items (excluding leather for bracelets/belts). Additional findings, chains, cording, and leather for bracelets and belts will also be available for cash purchase. This workshop is recommended for all skill levels – ages 13 and up. Beginners welcome!

Clay Open Studio is an opportunity for students to practice the clay skills they have already learned in our clay classes. Students have the chance to work in our studio using either hand building techniques or working on a pottery wheel. This is not an instructional class. There will be no instructor. By signing up for Clay Open Studio, you will receive 1/2 a bag of clay, 1 bisque fire, 1 glaze fire, and use of our glazes. We work with midfire clay. No outside clay is allowed (because disastrous things can happen in the kilns!) Since there is no instruction in Open Studio, some clay experience is necessary. You must have taken one of our clay courses to participate, or have clay experience from elsewhere. If you are throwing work on the wheel, we allow you to come in on the Monday following the first Clay Open Studio date to trim your work.

You're Invited! On the first Friday of every month, the Arts District in Liberty Station is packed with ways to enjoy the best in life! Whether your visit includes a waterfront walk, a bite & drink from one of the great restaurants or market, or a bit of fun shopping, San Diego Craft Collective will always have a free, family-friendly craft for kids that evening from 5-6 p.m. Each month the craft changes, so pop in while you're visiting and get crafty! July's Craft: Button Art This project is great for children of all ages. Young children may need help from an adult. From 5 - 6p.m., Free Kids Craft hosted outdoors in our back lot. Opening reception: 6 - 7:30 p.m. Friday, June 16. Join the La Jolla Historical Society for the opening of The Artist at Home, which invites viewers into the studio and domestic spaces of artists from throughout San Diego and Baja California through partial reconstructions and reimagining of their studios, original photography, as well as images of historic artist homes from across the country. The exhibition explores how these spaces influence artistic production and collaboration, and what they reveal about the modes of living and being as an artist. Original artist projects by Irene de Watteville, Jean Lowe and Kim MacConnel, and Irma Sofia Poeter will transport viewers to their private spaces, and playfully explore the history of Wisteria Cottage as a residence. Co-Curator Joey Herring photographically documented artists’ homes and studios from San Diego and Baja California, including those of Beliz Iristay, Einar and Jamex De la Torre, Johnny “Bear” Contreras, Marisol Rendón and Ingram Ober. Herring’s photographs reveal a stunning range of sites where creativity is housed and nurtured throughout the region. Additionally, on view will be historic images and stories of La Jolla’s crucibles of creativity including the Green Dragon Colony, and key historic figures from La Jolla’s artistic community. Finally, the exhibition considers the value of preserving and interpreting artist’s homes and studios and share examples of these efforts through a collaboration with the Historic Artists’ Homes & Studios (HAHS) program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation. Funding for this project generously provided by Suzanne Conlon, Judge Jonathan T. Colby (Ret.), Hugh Davies and Faye Hunter, Dr. Lisa Braun Glazer and Jeff Glazer, and Carole and Nicholas Preece. San Diego Comic-Con is about so much more than just movies and television. The San Diego Public Library and Comic-Con International have come together for the Comic Conference for Educators and Librarians (CCEL), a series of panels held at the Shiley Special Events Suite at the San Diego Central Library. Through presentations focused on educators and librarians, Comic-Con hopes to engage the community and promote comics as a medium for learning and as a literary art form. The CCEL panels span all five days of SDCC and are free to attend and open to the public. Those interested can register now at the SD Public Library website to reserve a seat. You can be a real life superhero. The San Diego Blood Bank returns to the Manchester Grand Hyatt during San Diego Comic-Con with their annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive for 2023. Not only is this an awesome opportunity to give blood to help save lives, but you also typically receive convention-themed goodies as a thank you (typically a t-shirt). Appointments are now available for Wednesday through Sunday during the convention, which can be booked at the links below. Walk-ins are also welcome, and no convention badge is needed to donate. Donation time varies by person, but allow at least an hour of your time for check-in and blood draw. The Comic-Con Art Show is open to the public... you do not need a badge to come in and enjoy, or purchase artwork. However, everyone entering the Art Show is expected to comply with all Terms and Conditions expected of our attendees. You’ll see numerous original drawings, paintings, sculptures, pieces of jewelry, and more “unusual” items, all created and displayed by professional and amateur artists. If you want to add something to your collection, many of the pieces are offered for purchase by Silent Auction* or Quick-Sale. Bidder numbers and Art Show information can be obtained from the administration table inside the Art Show. You must be 18 or older and have legal identification to purchase artwork, and payments may be made with cash or a credit card. The Art Show also displays the nominated books and comics for this year’s Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards. Come and see the best new works of the year!
