Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. It launched in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative – in sync with the County’s Live Well vision to sustain safe, healthy and thriving communities. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Each movie event gives residents a reason to visit their local parks after dark, deterring inappropriate loitering and park use, and bringing additional safety and security to residents’ favorite locales. Events begin as early as 5 p.m., though actual movie start times are 15 minutes after sunset. Before the movie, many locations provide additional entertainment like arts and crafts, games, costume contests, music, dancing and food trucks. FAQ: What should I bring? Plan to bring chairs or blankets for your comfort. Chairs are not provided at any of our events. Also, feel free to pack a picnic and enjoy your meal under the stars! Opening Reception: Saturday, June 10, 6-8 p.m. From the gallery: Quint Gallery is thrilled to present Paintings by Monique van Genderen, an artist who has been working in the expanded field of painting through the lens of Los Angeles since the early 2000’s. There will be an opening reception with the artist on June 10 from 6-8 p.m. "B Side," painted in van Genderen’s San Diego studio and completed in 2021, spans 35 of the 48 feet that make up one gallery wall. It was originally exhibited along A Side, a painting of equal dimension and created over the course of the same two-year period. Developed in a feedback loop with one another, these works and others that characterize her practice were made with repetition in mind, related to philosophies about memory and an attempt to catalog the image and understand it as language. Van Genderen then began a series of "afterimage" or "snapshot" paintings, near-exact replications which reverberate from areas of the larger works. The afterimage is an ocular phenomenon where an image lingers in the viewer’s sight even when the viewer has looked away. Now, two years later, she expands upon the afterimage of B-Side with a set of new paintings made for the exhibition and from the periphery of her own abstracted memory. For the viewer, this method invites them to focus beyond the spectacle of the monumental work and engage with the details, imprinted with the artist’s hand guiding an oil stick over an untreated canvas. Her painterly language may be understood through her search to humanize abstraction, in which intersections of landscapes and organic forms convey memories and evolve over time. Each work communicates the process of painting itself, using the canvas to create a sense of expansiveness, depth, and movement. Monique van Genderen was born in Vancouver, Canada and raised in Huntington Beach, CA. She received her MFA from the California Institute of the Arts, Valencia, CA, and her Bachelor of Fine Arts from the University of California, San Diego. She is the recipient of a Project Commission for Murals for La Jolla; the Chiaro Award, Headlands Center for the Arts, Sausalito, CA; Federal Courthouse Building Art Commission for the GSA, Arts and Architecture Program, Harrisburg, PA; and the West Hollywood 1% for the Arts Public Art Commission. In 2006, van Genderen participated in Art Unlimited, Art Basel 37, curated by Samuel Keller, and in 2004, was an Artist in Residence at the Chinati Foundation in Marfa, TX. Miracle Babies, a nonprofit organization whose mission is dedicated to helping perinatal mothers and their families during their time of need by providing transportation, mental health assistance and supportive services, has received a generous donation of 50,000 diapers from Baby2Baby for their upcoming diaper distribution. Baby2Baby is a nonprofit organization that provides children living in poverty with diapers, clothing and all the necessities that every child deserves. Miracle Babies will be hosting its next diaper distribution on Saturday, June 10, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., at the Jack in the Box Headquarters (9357 Spectrum Center Blvd., San Diego, 92123). Registered guests will be able to attend the free diaper distribution from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and the drive will be open to the public from 11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Over 350 local families are anticipated to attend. Miracle Babies has supplied over 1.3 million diapers throughout the pandemic to families in need. The San Diego Sci-Fi Coalition will assist Miracle Babies’ staff and volunteers distribute thousands of diapers, menstrual supply products, and other PPE products. The San Diego Sci-Fi Coalition is a volunteer group that dresses up as superheroes and attends charity events. American Medical Response (AMR) will also provide free car seat safety inspections on a limited basis. Families in need of products should register online at the Miracles Babies website to ensure availability of diaper sizes at www.miraclebabies.org. Diaper donations and volunteers are welcome and accepted at all distributions.
