Summer Movies in the Park is the largest free and family-friendly outdoor movie series in San Diego County, with dozens of hosting sites and over a hundred screenings. It launched in 2007 as a ‘take back our parks’ initiative – in sync with the County’s Live Well vision to sustain safe, healthy and thriving communities. Shows run May through October, in neighborhoods from the beach to the desert, and everything in between. Please bring your previous projects if you have attended multiple sessions. When does text become art? How does the use of words in artwork impact the whole? Join us on Friday, June 16 for a discussion on Celia Álvarez Muñoz’s "Home Economics" (1997) and Ed Ruscha’s "Ace" (1962). Then, using a found poetry activity to help spark ideas, incorporate text and traditional or modern calligraphy to create text-and-image-based artwork. Set during the early days of Augusto Pinochet’s dictatorship,"Chile ‘76" builds from quiet character study to gripping suspense thriller as it explores one woman’s precarious flirtation with political engagement. Carmen (Aline Kuppenheim) leads a sheltered upper middle class existence. She heads to her summer house in the off-season to supervise its renovation, while also performing local charitable works through her church. Her husband, children, and grandchildren come back and forth during the winter vacation, bringing reminders of the world beyond. When the family priest asks her to take care of an injured young man he has been sheltering in secret, Carmen is inadvertently drawn into the world of the Chilean political opposition and must face real-world threats she is unprepared to handle, with potentially disastrous consequences for her and her entire family.
