Divergence Art Collective is pleased to present "Vignette Wonderland", a group show featuring paintings, drawings and mixed media pieces. From Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Peter Pan, humans love stories of dissatisfied heroes in new and magical contexts. Each scene in such tales traditionally functioned as a moral vignette with valuable lessons, but recent pop culture and art has taken the idea of wonderlands even further. Movies with this device include Nightmare Before Christmas, Spirited Away and Groundhog Day. Drawing inspiration from this modality, our show celebrates the transformative power of changing context. With the freedom of a magical premise, our artists have deployed everything from intricate linework to bold dashes of color. Even at their most fun, the artworks exhibit a sophisticated whimsy that is not without dichotomies. If you've ever had a wish come true in a weird way, or simply dream of extraordinary realms - "Vignette Wonderland" is the show for you.

For 23 years, the Athenaeum has presented unforgettable festivals featuring virtuoso pianist and San Diego native Gustavo Romero performing the complete piano repertoire of a specific composer from memory—you will not want to miss our upcoming 24th Summer Festival, during which he will play Schubert's complete piano sonatas. Dinners will be offered at the Athenaeum after the first and last concerts (July 2 and 23) providing an opportunity for concertgoers to socialize, meet Mr. Romero, and share a delicious meal. All concerts begin at 4 P.M. at the Athenaeum. Priority seating will be given to Donor level members and above, and to dinner guests. The repertoire of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Choir San Diego is primarily gospel, both traditional and contemporary. Unlike traditional gospel choirs, we include a part for bass and baritone. The choir is also proficient in Negro spirituals, anthems, and oratorios. With the exception of classical pieces and some Negro spiritual arrangements, the music is taught by rote, after the oral tradition from which the music comes. Participants are non-auditioned, needing only to be able to sing in tune. Some vocal training is provided and some coaching for those who don’t read music. Our purpose is to raise funds through a series of concerts for educational grants that we distribute to aspiring college-bound high school majors in Visual and Performing Arts from the San Diego County area. The Choir will be joined by First UU San Diego music director Marshall Voit, who has spent 20 years studying and performing music for social justice and social change. Marshall will open the concert with a program of freedom and justice songs that he’s collected during that time, including protest music classics, original compositions, and lesser known but equally moving songs for social change. Join award-winning astrophotographer, Chris Olivas, in exploring the amazing dark skies of Borrego Springs, California. Learn how to create stunning photos of the Milky Way in as little as one session. In this workshop, Chris will take you through the basics of astrophotography, and you’ll get to use a variety of lenses and tools as you learn. You’ll visit several unique and easy to access locations, such as the sculptures of Galleta Meadows, ideal backdrops for the Milky Way. This is a great workshop for beginners with limited space for personalized instruction. This workshop includes a 1-hour virtual pre-meeting session and a 4-hour on site session from 8 p.m. - Midnight.
