In celebration of Filipino American History Month, Maraya Performing Arts is hosting a summit that offers educational master classes and professional performances for kids and their families who are interested in the performing arts and entertainment industry. The summit will feature a variety of activities, including introductory classes in musical theatre, acting, and various dance styles such as ballet, hip hop, breakdancing, and contemporary dance. One of the highlights of the event is the "Industry Kids" panel discussion, designed for children aged 4-17 years old who aspire to become professional performers on stage, in TV/film, and commercials. This panel discussion will provide valuable insights and advice from Filipino professionals in the arts industry, including former Maraya Performing Arts student and TV/film triple threat youth actor, Romi Herrada (known for Paramount Plus' "My Dream Quinceanera" and Disney Pixar's upcoming animated series "Win or Lose") and Kim Montelibano Heil, local Casting Director at The Old Globe Theatre. Attendees will also have the opportunity to enjoy snacks and lunch throughout the day. Additionally, Maraya Performing Arts is partnering with the San Diego Blood Drive to host a blood drive in the parking lot during the event, providing an opportunity for attendees to give back to the community. In this one-day workshop, students will learn about the properties of wood and how different wood species need to be approached when sanding and finishing. We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. The skills learned in this course will allow you to elevate your future projects by adding curves and texture. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spokeshaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. Whether you’re new to the woodshop or have extensive woodworking experience, we welcome you to join us for an afternoon of shaping wood! No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. About Woodworking for Women & Non-Binary Woodworking for Women classes are designed to empower women & nonbinary individuals in a supportive and educational woodshop environment which is predominantly a masculine space.
