SEED Suite The inaugural SEED Suite, a new initiative that invites choreographers from the prior season’s SEED Concert (formerly known as Everyday Dances) to remount their work. This year’s SEED Suite will include work by Gina Bolles Sorensen and Kyle Sorensen, Khamla Somphanh, and Viviana Alcazar. Companions A remount of the 2024 San Diego Museum of Art commissioned piece Companions, by Artistic Director Christopher K. Morgan and Founding Director John Malashock, who each created a dance responding to the painting A Child’s Companion by Arshile Gorky. The Dulling Effect The world premiere of Artistic Director Christopher K. Morgan’s The Dulling Effect. Inspired by a 1934 Harvard study on how radio has a dulling effect on the higher mental processes of the listener, Christopher’s curiosity on how that dulling effect may have increased over the last 90 years of technology, and his concern that current political and legislative initiatives in the US are attempting to homogenize citizens, rather than celebrating their unique individual beauty.   • The fires raging across Los Angeles are putting some cultural institutions in danger.
  • Saturday, Oct. 12, 2024 from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Caltrans is closing traffic at the 43rd St on and off-ramps at Interstate 805 while crews perform routine scheduled road and landscape maintenance. As the work is being performed, members of the public will have the opportunity to walk and bike the highway while helping to clean it up and learn more about the Reconnecting Communities: Highways 2 Boulevards Pilot Program. Caltrans, SANDAG, Mundo Gardens, and the Urban Collaborative Project CDC will host this family-friendly event, which will include booths from public agencies and community organizations, live art demonstrations, and other engagement activities. Trash pickers and trash bags are available to beautify the area. Attendees can enter the event at the 43rd Street / I-805 ramps, across from the Southcrest Park Plaza.   • Join Space 4 Art at the Sherman Heights Community Center on Tuesday, September 10 from 6-8 p.m. to experience a moving art exhibit featuring quilts created by January’s flood-impacted families. This community event showcases a collaborative quilt made during a healing-arts workshop led by teaching artist Yvette Roman in late August, when families used creativity to express their experiences and emotions connected to the floods. After the exhibit, families will take home the quilt pieces they contributed, serving as a lasting reminder of their collective strength.   • J.T. Burke’s highly anticipated exhibition, "Paradise," makes its San Diego debut at the Mandell Weiss Gallery on October 4, 2024, offering viewers an exploration of myth and utopia. Opening as part of the San Diego Ballet’s 35th season launch event, "Overture," the exhibit promises an engaging blend of contemporary art and performance. Exhibit runs through Jan. 17, 2025. Burke draws inspiration from vintage costume jewelry, sourced from swap meets, garage sales, and forgotten drawers, transforming these discarded artifacts into luminous visions of an imagined utopia. Through intricate digital manipulation, he creates surreal compositions that blur the line between the real and the fantastical, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the intricate details where the mundane meets the mythical. The opening coincides with "Overture," the San Diego Ballet's season debut event celebrating its 35th anniversary.
