J.T. Burke’s highly anticipated exhibition, "Paradise," makes its San Diego debut at the Mandell Weiss Gallery on October 4, 2024, offering viewers an exploration of myth and utopia. Opening as part of the San Diego Ballet’s 35th season launch event, "Overture," the exhibit promises an engaging blend of contemporary art and performance. Exhibit runs through Jan. 17, 2025. Burke draws inspiration from vintage costume jewelry, sourced from swap meets, garage sales, and forgotten drawers, transforming these discarded artifacts into luminous visions of an imagined utopia. Through intricate digital manipulation, he creates surreal compositions that blur the line between the real and the fantastical, inviting viewers to lose themselves in the intricate details where the mundane meets the mythical. The opening coincides with "Overture," the San Diego Ballet's season debut event celebrating its 35th anniversary. Join Space 4 Art at the Sherman Heights Community Center on Tuesday, September 10 from 6-8 p.m. to experience a moving art exhibit featuring quilts created by January’s flood-impacted families. This community event showcases a collaborative quilt made during a healing-arts workshop led by teaching artist Yvette Roman in late August, when families used creativity to express their experiences and emotions connected to the floods. After the exhibit, families will take home the quilt pieces they contributed, serving as a lasting reminder of their collective strength. The weekend begins with an unforgettable live performance by La Pocha Nostra, featuring La Pocha Nostra’s Artistic Directors Balitrónica and Guillermo Gómez-Peña, with special guest Perry Vasquez. The Mex Files: A Divination Ritual is an immersive, live-action duet where spoken word and ritual performance collide. In a piece that defies conventional storytelling, Balitrónica manipulates tarot decks and a casino roulette, allowing fate to dictate the script and performance, creating a constantly evolving experience. This intimate and raw performance confronts both personal and collective crises, speaking to Gómez-Peña’s ongoing exploration of cultural reinvention, spiritual upheaval, and survival in the age of pandemics. The weekend continues with a screening of four of Gómez-Peña’s groundbreaking films on Sunday, October 20 at The Front Arte Cultura Gallery, offering a rare glimpse into the evolution of his cinematic work. November 16, from 9-11:30 a.m. In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called 'scars' and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. Saturday, October 19, from 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The seasons are changing, and it's a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you'll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Craft Collective approximately one week after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class). Materials fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class. Beginners welcome.
