In the second half, the past is unraveled, from the complexity of Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone music to the lush voice of his brother-in-law, Alexander Zemlinsky, and finally culminating in the rarely-heard original version of Schumann’s Symphony no. 4, a masterpiece of the Romantic era. Anna Thorvaldsdottir's METACOSMOS plunges the listener into a vast maelstrom of cosmic forces tugging in all directions until finally colliding into what the composer calls unified chaos, followed by George Walker's Lyric for Strings and Margaret Bonds' The Montgomery Variations. The concert will conclude with John Adams's profound and reflective masterpiece, On the Transmigration of Souls, written in the year following the September 11 attacks in New York City.
