In the second half, the past is unraveled, from the complexity of Arnold Schoenberg’s twelve-tone music to the lush voice of his brother-in-law, Alexander Zemlinsky, and finally culminating in the rarely-heard original version of Schumann’s Symphony no. 4, a masterpiece of the Romantic era. The concert will conclude with John Adams's profound and reflective masterpiece, On the Transmigration of Souls, written in the year following the September 11 attacks in New York City.
