Join us for an artist talk on August 23 from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ! Lori Mitchell, and Gillian Moss will all share more about themselves, their process, and their works in their exhibition, Turning Tides! The exhibition will present works by all 12 TWA group members, showcasing their individual visions of what “Turning Tides” means to them. As we head into a changed world, post-pandemic and with social and political shifts, these are expressions of hope during transition, of ways to move forward, of the force of the spirit and the resilience of nature. The works are in a range of media: from textiles to painting, ceramic and bronze sculpture to mixed media, and in many styles, from abstract to whimsical to realism. The group has been working and showing together for 6 years, and were recently featured at the Oceanside Museum of Art in an exhibition titled “Now.” Member artists also show individually, in galleries and museums on both coasts, and their work is held in corporate and private collections worldwide. From the KPBS weekend arts preview: Gesture, fashion and emotion were the first things I noticed in Lani Emanuel's exhibition at Oceanside Museum of Art. "Beside Herself" is a series of large figurative paintings that chronicle the formative years of a girl's life, and the swings from joy to grief to annoyance to awkwardness is so palpable. Emanuel paints with a minimal backdrop, so the focus is on the light and movement in the image. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the artist: "Beside Herself is a journey of personal exploration concerning a difficult childhood and adolescence. My paintings are all in some way autobiographical, but additionally, they embody comparisons between my personal and contemporary young women’s issues concerning identity development, emotionality, connection and communication, introspection, family dynamics, and female relationships. They address these issues through the specifics of contemporary young women’s body language, gestures, gaze, interaction, and clothing choices. My series of shoe paintings represent the playful style choices of young women. I portray these young women as individuals and place them in minimalistic interior environments or exterior non-environments. I show a specific quality and direction of light to emphasize the mood of each painting. My figurative paintings are painted in oil on canvas or linen and are primarily created using the Zorn limited palette. I occasionally include an object or signifier such as an orange power cord, partially opened double doors, a tin foil star wand, or chandelier print wallpaper to invite an open-ended interpretation for the viewer. I depict the young women in my figurative paintings life-sized in the hopes that they will command attention, versus being easily ignored." –Lani Emanuel Learn more about the exhibition here. Join I Love A Clean San Diego, Alpine Community Center, and the County of San Diego for a litter cleanup in Alpine! We will divert litter from the San Diego Watershed and keep it from traveling to the Pacific Ocean. Our staff will be set-up with a check-in table and supplies at Alpine Community Center. Join us at 9am for a talk by our Education Team about our watersheds and recycling right, then grab supplies and help us clean up! We will sort and dispose of collected litter, and after the cleanup you can receive community service verification in your Community Hub dashboard. We encourage social distancing and masks. This event requires a signed release-of-liability waiver for all volunteers, and anyone under 18 needs a waiver signed by a guardian. From the organizers: Celebrating ballet masterworks from the 20th century by the father of American ballet, George Balanchine, and the famed New York City Ballet principal dancer, choreographer, and artistic director Peter Martins. 'Rubies' In 1967, the great Russian-born choreographer, George Balanchine, created his world famous ballet Jewels for the New York City Ballet. The three act ballets all have a different composer and motif. Rubies, with music by Igor Stravinsky, is the second act of the ballet and truly captures the sexy energy and athleticism of our country. The ballet is packed with adventure, fun and playfulness, and the dazzling bejeweled costumes will take your breath away. 'Divertimento' from 'Le Baiser De La Fée' Divertimento from Le Baiser De La Fée (the Fairy’s Kiss) was created for the New York City Ballet for the 1972 Stravinsky Festival. The New York Times dance critic has described the ballet as one of George Balanchine’s greatest and most unusual works. The choreography is deeply poetic and has always moved audiences by its light and shade, creating an experience you will never forget. 'Ash' With accelerated tempi to the exciting music by Michael Torke, Peter Martins, former artistic director of New York City Ballet, launches 10 dancers on a non-stop series of thrilling solos, duets, and ensemble dances that leaves audiences amazed and thrilled.
