San Diego hired a local community outreach organization — Pillars of the Community — to help eligible households take advantage of a new $3.2 billion federal program to lower the cost of broadband Internet service during the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to the researchers, 19% of respondents reported an increase in violence in their community during the pandemic, 15% reported more partner violence against women, 11% reported an escalation in family violence against children and 35% reported a rise in substance abuse in their community.

San Diego County residents age 12 and up are now eligible to receive the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine.

The San Diego Housing Commission will receive 470 federal Emergency Housing Vouchers from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development to help pay rent for San Diegans experiencing homelessness or at risk of becoming homeless, it was announced Wednesday.

The blaze erupted about 3:30 p.m. near the eastbound lanes of the freeway, west of Los Coches Road in the unincorporated Granite Hills area, according to Cal Fire.
