A type of "magic mushroom" is gaining interest in the United States, but scientists at UC San Diego warned Monday it may not be the one people think they are purchasing.

San Diego County's desert areas will see sweltering conditions this week, with triple-digit temperatures reaching as high as 113 by next Saturday.

San Diego has awarded more than $365,000 to local businesses and nonprofits to help them rebuild and recover from the Jan. 22 storm, it was announced Friday.

Nisleit walked out of the front doors of the department's East Village headquarters for the final time as chief in the early afternoon, flanked by rows of saluting uniformed officers.

The excessive heat warning will be in effect until 9 p.m. Friday. The hottest days are expected to be on Thursday and Friday.

"Coastal flooding threatens our homes, businesses and overall quality of life," said Imperial Beach Mayor Paloma Aguirre. "This grant allows us to develop targeted strategies to adapt to rising sea levels and improve our community's resilience, ensuring a safer, healthier and more sustainable future for all our residents.

Officials with the U.S. Department of Transportation issued a statement in response to Southwest's cancellations, noting that the department will be looking into the situation.

The National Weather Service has issued an excessive-heat warning, effective from 10 a.m. Tuesday to 8 p.m. next Monday.

The department is looking to fill over 400 positions, and willing to pay tens of thousands of dollars in signing bonuses to attract new employees.
