Heavy rain and isolated thunderstorms are expected to develop over the mountains and deserts Thursday morning as an upper level disturbance moves through the region. -
The National Weather Service said the long-period southwest swell that was creating conditions favorable for rip currents and elevated surf was expected to decrease through Thursday. -
County officials also issued a general advisory stating that coastal waters — including Mission Bay and San Diego Bay — should be avoided for 72 hours after rain -
A National Weather Service beach hazards statement was scheduled to take effect Friday night and extend until Sunday night. Meteorologists said large southerly swells generated by the storm could reach local beaches as soon as Saturday evening. -
Public rinse stations in all state-run beaches and parks will be off limits effective July 15. -
The trash was picked up as part of a post-Fourth of July cleanup to keep litter out of the ocean. Surfrider Foundation and I Love a Clean San Diego organized the cleanup. -
The Santa Monica-based environmental group Heal the Bay gave 93 percent of the region's beaches an A grade for water quality for the dry periods last summer and winter — and there were a lot of dry times.
