It’s going to be a tight squeeze at San Diego City beaches this holiday weekend. A rough winter has resulted in some skinny beaches.
The waves were large and frequent this past winter, and when they crashed on the beach they took a lot of sand with them back out to sea.
Lifeguard Lieutenant Nick Lerma estimates that some sandy beaches have lost about 25 yards in width. He says all the beaches have felt the impact.
“South Mission Beach has so much sand it’s hard to really see how it’s been affected, but it has been affected,” he said. “But as you move further north toward the Wave House and the Lifeguard station in Mission Beach, it’s clear to see that there’s not a lot of sand.”
Lerma says swells coming in from the south tend to replace the sand in the summer, but for now things are tight. Lerma also says part of the beach has to be cordoned off for lifeguard trucks.
He says more than a million people could come to city beaches this weekend.
