Leaves typically start to peak in northern states by early October, but projecting peak foliage isn't an exact science. Here are some things you can do to get the most out of fall's colors.

A National Weather Service wind advisory for the mountains and deserts is set to take effect at 5 p.m. Thursday and extend until 3 a.m. Saturday.

A flash flood watch will remain in effect from noon through Friday evening for the mountains and deserts, while rain is expected throughout San Diego County. A rain advisory for coast waters is in effect for Friday.

The chance of showers will gradually increase Thursday afternoon and evening and "become likely" Thursday night through Friday.

A storm system will likely bring showers to areas other than the deserts and a slight chance of thunderstorms to the mountains.
