Annual Candy Buy Back Program Begins

The third annual "Candy Buy Back'' program, in which children can sell excess unopened Halloween candy to participating physicians and dentists in San Diego County for $1 per pound, got under way today.

Candy collected through Sunday will be sent to armed forces members deployed overseas as part of their care packages.

More than 3,800 pounds of candy was collected in the county last year, and the goal this time is 5,000 pounds, organizers said.

"This program is a perfect fit for the San Diego community,'' said Cheryl Moder, director of the San Diego County Childhood Obesity Initiative. "We are very encouraged by the number of dentists and physicians that are volunteering to participate this year and are hopeful our local families will see the many benefits this program brings.''

A list of participating doctors and dentists is available at candybuyback.org.
