The new children's book, "Dasha on the Trail," is a hike through Southern California’s rugged landscape as seen from eyes and snout of a lighthearted pup, Dasha. She sniffs out animals on the trail like mischievous ravens and her leash-free cousins, the coyotes. She longs for freedom but knows a tame dog might not know all the tricks of this untamed world.

In this Sunbelt Spotlight, we will take a look at this charming story with author and illustrator Gwynne Bruck. She will share with us how this story came to be and provide tips for safely exploring San Diego County parks with your pooch.

We will also be joined by Mission Trails Regional Park Ranger Heidi Gutknecht. Mission Trails Regional Park serves at the setting for the book. The park is filled with native wildlife and examples of California’s chaparral and coastal sage scrub. With more than 8,000 acres, Mission Trails is one of largest urban parks in the United States and features 65-miles of trails, a visitor center, and campground.

About Gwynne:
After twenty five years as a boat captain, Gwynne decided to change course and began writing and illustrating children’s books. In her first book, she highlights some of the local wildlife that Dasha points out on their hikes together. It is her hope that readers will learn a little about their wild neighbors and go out and explore the beauty of San Diego’s open spaces.
