The Timken is fortunate to have a collection of Russian icons. This form of sacred art of the Eastern Rite is to a great extent important to the development of Renaissance art. Mostly tempera on panel, these icons are portraits of Jesus and his mother, saints, or Bible episodes depicted in the Byzantine style. In the Timkens's own early Renaissance works, the influence of these icons can be seen. We will discuss some of the salient points about this unique art form in order to understand its meaning and significance in this docent-led talk.
