Clay Hoffman will speak on “The Irish Brigade of the Civil War.” This renowned unit consisted predominantly of Irish Americans who fought for the Union, most of whom were recent immigrants. Often leading the charge, the Irish Brigade suffered one of the highest casualty rates of any Union brigade during the war. The Irishmen were known for their Gaelic war cry of “Faugh a ballaugh,” meaning "Clear the way.” Clay Hoffman is a longtime member of the San Diego Civil War Round Table and has written dozens of articles on historical topics. His recent book is "A Pearl of Uganda: The Story of Holy Innocents Children's Hospital."ss
