Author Clay Hoffman will speak on his book “Notable Companions of the Military Order of Foreign Wars,” which comprises profiles of historic American patriots. His talk will discuss a number of the patriots portrayed in the book who have served in the Civil War and other American wars, including Admiral George Dewey (Capture of New Orleans, Port Hudson); General Joseph C. Breckinridge Sr. (Shiloh, Atlanta Campaign); Admiral Stephen B. Luce (Siege of Charleston); and General Alexander S. Webb (Bull Run, Antietam, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg).
Clay is a longtime member of the San Diego Civil War Round Table and has written dozens of articles on historical topics.
We will also congratulate winners of the Dave Tooley Civil War Research Essay Contest.

Mission Valley Branch Library
The Mission Valley Branch Library is one of the thirty-five branches of the San Diego Public Library system. The 19,760 sq. ft. facility was opened July 20, 2002. The Library received an Orchid Award from the San Diego Chapter of the American Institute of Architects for "Best Institutional Design" and "Best Divine Details" for the lighted tree columns/sculptures throughout the facility. The Library includes a large community meeting room, seminar rooms, a children's library, an outdoor patio with a children's garden which has a flowing river sculpture, a computer lab and a mezzanine and terrace. Its excellent collection of books and media, central location, and close proximity to retailers and a trolley stop have made it a popular Library destination for many San Diegans.
