In the exhibition "A-dress: Power and Belief," artist Irma Sofia Poeter considers the dress as a sculptural language, a second skin where personal and collective narratives meet. Repurposing industrial textiles, recycled, and artisanal fabrics, Poeter creates dresses, capes and soft sculptures that trace how meaning is stitched into what we wear, and how the act of wearing becomes a form of expression. Here, the dress operates as both object and argument. It asks how identity is armored or softened, how beliefs are worn and sometimes unraveled. This creative approach to the garment reflects several decades of exploration by Poeter.
We invite you to join us for the reception on Wednesday, October 7, 4 - 7 p.m. Meet the artist and enjoy refreshments. There will also be a conversation with the artist on Wednesday, October 21 at 6 p.m.
October 7 also marks the premiere of "Insights into Art with Alessandra Moctezuma," a KPBS Explore digital arts series produced by San Diego Mesa College’s gallery director. Poeter is featured in the first episode, available on KPBS+ and the KPBS Explore YouTube page.

San Diego Mesa College Art Gallery
The Mesa College Art Gallery is an educational forum to present the work of professional artists in a range of media and dealing with diverse issues. The gallery also showcases outstanding artwork created by students in the Art Department. It is our mission to enrich and engage our student community through art. The gallery exhibits are complemented with artist lectures, workshops, and guided tours. The works on display reflect a variety of topics in order to engage students from other disciplines and departments. We have created exhibits in collaboration with Chicano Studies, Women Studies and the Black Studies department. The gallery serves as a laboratory for the Art Department's Museum Studies Program. The college is the only San Diego institution to offer an AA and a Certificate in Museum Studies/Gallery Exhibition Skills. During the academic year four exhibits features art by emerging and established contemporary artists. A student exhibition is held at the end of every semester. Besides exhibits in our main space, D101, the Art Gallery program and the Museum Studies classes also curate exhibits in the LRC, 2nd Floor Art Corridor.
