The program brings together two audience favorites from Artistic Director Javier Velasco: the romantic QUE BONITO AMOR, set to a rapturous score of mariachi music, and the high-energy MAMBOMANIA, one of Velasco’s signature works.
Together, the works showcase a side of San Diego Ballet that has become a hallmark of the company during its 37-year history: classical dance infused with the music, culture and energy of the region it calls home.
“Día de los Muertos is a beautiful celebration of the people we’ve loved and lost, and these two ballets have always been deeply personal to me,” said Velasco. “Mambomania was inspired by my father’s love of mambo music, while Que Bonito Amor grew from memories of dancing with my mother to mariachi music. In many ways, these works have become my own altar to my parents, bringing their spirit back to me through music and dance.”
QUE BONITO AMOR pairs ballet with the passion and romance of mariachi music, creating a colorful celebration of love and Mexican musical tradition. MAMBOMANIA turns up the tempo with Velasco’s exuberant choreography, blending the precision of ballet with the irresistible rhythms and energy of mambo.
The performances also mark San Diego Ballet’s return to The San Diego Museum of Art following the company’s successful residency there during the Museum’s centennial season. “Experience – Día de los Muertos” is the first of three San Diego Ballet programs at the Museum during the 2026–2027 season.
