U.S. law enforcement authorities have arrested a Tijuana policeman in San Ysidro on suspicion he kidnapped a 26 year old Mexican woman and extorted money from her family. The woman was in Tijuana waiting to cross the border illegally and join her family in Ventura. KPBS Reporter Amy Isackson has the story.
The family began receiving calls demanding more money for the woman to be delivered safely. The caller threatened to prostitute, rape and kill to the woman if he didn't get it. The family called the Sheriff. And that sparked a massive cross border search for the victim. U.S. and Mexican authorities found her in a Tijuana house and arrested Tijuana policeman Isaias Limon de la Rosa near a Western Union in San Ysidro.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Frank Marwood says they've received reports of similar cases from across the country.
Marwood: "It's a uniform pattern that occurs in these kinds of smuggling adventures that then evolve into extortion."
This case and one last week suggest the violence associated with smuggling in Arizona may be spreading to San Diego. Amy Isackson, KPBS news.
