A majority of San Diego County students aren't meeting minimal standards of physical fitness. That's according to the latest results of the California Physical Fitness Test. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.
1.3 million California students in fifth, seventh, and ninth grades took the test. It's made up of six assessments that measure things like body fat, flexibility, and aerobic endurance.
In San Diego County, just 28 percent of students passed all six assessments. 27 percent passed statewide.
State Superintendent Jack O'Connell says it's clear children aren't getting enough exercise.
O'Connell: "Parents must make physical activity family activity, students should walk more, run more, play active games at all times of the day."
Statewide, scores went up about three ercent over last year.
The California Board of Education recently adopted content standards for P.E.
