San Diego County's Airport Authority Monday reviewed two rural locations as potential replacements for Lindbergh Field as the county's airport. The Authority continues to whittle down possible locations as it gets closer to a summer deadline to make a final selection. KPBS reporter Beth Ford Roth has more.

One of the remote sites is in Boulevard in rural East San Diego County. The other is in the southwestern corner of Imperial County. Consultants have told the Authority each site would cost roughly $17 billion to develop.
Authority vice-chairman Paul Nieto says members haven't come up with a limit of what would be too pricey an estimate.

Nieto: "What we asked our staff to do is to come back with a financial model so that we can really zero in on what that number is."

The new airport would be financed by its users: airlines, rental car agencies and passengers; bonds from borrowing against revenue generated by user fees; and federal transportation grants.

The Authority's deadline to select a replacement site is August 11th.
