Federal and county investigators are interviewing witnesses this afternoon in their efforts to determine what caused two Cessnas to collide in flight near Gillespie Field in El Cajon.

Federal and county investigators are interviewing witnesses this afternoon in their efforts to determine what caused two Cessnas to collide in flight near Gillespie Field in El Cajon.

Investigators say one plane carried a student and his flight instructor collided with a plane whose pilot was on a solo flight. The names of the victims have not been released.

National Transportation Safety Board spokeswoman Kristi Dunks says local
officials and a representative from the Cessna Aircraft Company are assisting in the investigation.

Dunks: We have witness reports indicating that these two aircraft collided in flight and at this point we're gathering facts on scene - documenting the wreckage.

Dunks says the wreckage will be reassembled at a storage facility north of Los Angeles.

She says the student on board the training flight was a pilot with flying experience and was familiarizing himself with the San Diego area.

Dunks says the investigation could take up to six months.
