New home construction in California increased eight-percent last month compared to a year ago. The increase is more dramatic from January to February of this year. KPBS Reporter Ed Joyce has more.

The California Building Industry Association report shows that construction jumped 27-percent from January to February of this year. Much of the increase is due the construction of more condos and town homes. In San Diego County, building industry executive director Paul Tryon, says the building of smaller, attached units is part of a continuing trend.

Tryon: We are up almost triple the number of permits in February by comparison with January and up almost double thus far for the year on condominums and town houses."

Tryon says condo and town home construction is greatest in downtown San Diego, Chula Vista, Carlsbad and San Marcos. He says the county's pace of home construction is expected to remain steady this year. Ed Joyce, KPBS News.
