San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders has announced he will ask the city council for a resolution allowing the Chargers to look for land for a new stadium outside the city.
KPBS reporter Alison St John has more.

There was nothing stopping the Chargers from looking outside city limits for a new stadium deal. But, the mayor's spokesman, Fred Sainz, says Sanders' announcement underscores the city is simply not in a position to subsidies a new football stadium.

Sainz: "It is his firmly held belief that the city does not have one dime, one dollar to dedicate to a new stadium, in addition in terms of giving land away the mayor would not support that."

Sainz says the mayor sees the Chargers as an important regional asset, but wants them to understand the city faces tough financial times, and has to provide basic services to its citizens first. If the team accepts those constraints, the mayor would welcome discussions with them. Alison St John, KPBS news.
