San Diego School District officials say their students continue to show steady progress in math. Officials believe the improvement is a direct result from the professional training that math teachers receive. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
San Diego school students showed the biggest gains in math last year according to California test scores. District officials want to continue that trend by providing top-notch teacher training in algebra, geometry and calculus. They believe students test scores will go up once teachers math skills increase. Genevieve Esmende teaches math at Wangenheim Middle School. She says math teachers are under increased pressure.
Esmende: "We're always stressing about the standards making sure we're doing that every single day. And so there is a lot of pressure but we try to find some ways that we can be creative with it and still relate it to the standards."
Close to 140 San Diego math teachers are attending workshops this week in Mission Valley. The district's focus is to get all students to pass Algebra. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
