Cal State San Marcos is admitting large numbers of Latino students, but campus administrators say the challenge is keeping them there. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The most recent numbers from Cal State San Marcos show 40 percent of Latino students drop out after their first year. That's more than dropped out the previous year. That concerns university officials because the campus is federally mandated to enroll and retain a certain level of Latino students. Cal State San Marcos spokesman Nathan Evans says there could be a variety of factors at play.
Evans: "Whether or not they need any remediation out of high school, do they need additional support for mathematics or English? Or are there other factors? Is it a financial factor prohibiting them from really continuing on?"
Evans says another factor could be a lack of social andr cultural support networks on campus. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
