About 500 students who live in San Diego’s mid-city neighborhood will attend a new elementary school next year. It's named after an Olympic track star who spent a lot of time inspiring youngsters. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
Florence Griffith Joyner Elementary School is scheduled to open in September.
San Diego school officials say the new campus will ease overcrowding at two nearby campuses: Rosa Parks and Hamilton. In fact, the district shifted the neighborhood’s attendance boundary so parents with kids at the two older campuses will have to send their kids to Joyner. District spokesman Roy MacPhail says the adjustment will free-up much needed space at Rosa Parks.
MacPhail : Their entire kindergarten class of almost 200 students are actually not on the Rosa Parks campus. They’re in a small annex near Hoover High School, so when we open Joyner those students can stay in their neighborhood.
The shift also allows the principal at Hamiliton Elementary to get rid of a number of old portable classrooms. And about 50 mid-city students will no longer have to be bused to schools in the eastern part of the district. Ana Tintocalis, KPBS News.
