Doctor Offers Advice to Avoid Medical Mistakes

Tom Fudge:   People who have covered the news in San Diego over the past decade knew Chuck Nathanson. He was director of a think tank called San Diego Dialogue. Nathanson's group worked to make San Diego a better place and to forge closer relations with Tijuana.

But Chuck Nathanson died of cancer in 2003 at the age of 61. His wife, Laura Nathanson grieved. But when she reviewed Chuck's medical records she got angry.  Laura, a medical doctor herself, believed that her husband didn't have to die.  A report from early on in Chuck's illness indicated to Laura that the medical team failed to follow up on a troubling X-ray.

 
Now, Dr. Nathanson has written a book about her husband's death, advising patients to troubleshoot their doctors' decisions. The book is called What You Don’t Know Can Kill You , and it comes out in April.
