Officials at the San Diego chapter of Planned Parenthood say they’re outraged by the Supreme Court decision upholding the federal ban of a particular abortion procedure. KPBS reporter Kenny Goldberg has the story.
The abortion method involves removing a fetus from a mother’s womb and destroying its skull. It’s believed about 2,200 of these procedures are performed each year nationwide.
Dr. Kathleen Sheehan is the medical director of the local Planned Parenthood chapter. She says her doctors don’t use this method. Even so, Sheehan says the Supreme Court has no business banning it.
Sheehan : I have to tell you that I’m appalled that they would make a decision to make a procedure that has been deemed safe and appropriate a criminal act. I think it’s unbelievable.
Sheehan thinks the decision will only encourage abortion opponents to try to further restrict a woman’s right to a safe and legal abortion.
