City Attorney Wants Special Probe of SDCC Land Deal

San Diego City Attorney Mike Aguirre wants San Diego Community College officials to launch a special investigation into a downtown campus expansion project. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.

Aguirre says an independent auditor should examine financial transactions linked to properties San Diego City College bought with taxpayer money. The city attorney says college officials wasted more than half a million dollars buying a piece of property near the campus. Two prominent businessmen originally bought the land for $750,000, then sold it to the college for roughly $1.3 million dollars. Aguirre says so far, college administrators haven't done much to shed light on the matter.

Aguirre: San Diego taxpayers are definitely at risk. $500,000 has clearly been wasted. And the tepid response on the part of the board of trustees is questionable.

Meanwhile, San Diego City College's chancellor wants District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis to investigate the land deal.
