A group of science-minded teenagers around San Diego County got some real world lab experience this summer. KPBS reporter Ana Tintocalis has this report.
Senior Minh Tran is one of 21 high school students who presented a final report on the scientific research she tackled this summer. These teens worked alongside real scientists at the Scripps Research Institute as part of an eight week internship program.
Senior Leonora Hernandez is from Mar Vista High School in Imperial Beach. She helped to clone strains of protein in the Nobel Prize winning Wuthrich lab.
Leonora says was intimidated at first, but says scientists are actually a funny bunch.
Leonora : They all had fabulous senses of humor, they made jokes, they were really friendly. And I know if I struggled with something I could turn around and ask them for something. It was a great environment.
The program's goal is to culture a new batch of research scientists.
