John Vanderslice's Emerald City
The new John Vanderslice album Emerald City arrived in stores and on my desk last week. I really like it. If you go here, you can see video of Vanderslice and his band performing each of the tracks off Emerald City in their Tiny Telephone studios.
So far, favorite tracks are The Parade, White Dove, and Central Booking. The latter is about Vanderslice's experiences going through an immigration nightmare trying to get a US visa for his French girlfriend. And, much like his 2005 album Pixel Revolt , Emerald City refers a lot to 9/11 and its aftermath.
When the album arrived, I took one look at the cover and knew that Autumn de Wilde did the photography. You can see her other work here - you won't be disappointed. My favorites are her portraits of Miranda July , The Raconteurs , Jenny Lewis , Yeah Yeah Yeahs and Beck . Honestly, they're all great. You'll see what I mean.
