Cal State and University of California students will pay higher tuition fees next year. University officials approved the increases Wednesday to help fill a gaping hole in their budgets. KPBS reporter Andrew Phelps has more.
The increase is 10 percent for CSU students and 7.4 percent for UC students.
That means a full-time undergraduate at UCSD would pay a little more than $8,000 a year.
UC President Robert Dynes says the decision to raise tuition is "agonizing" but "necessary." The governor's May budget revision is easier on higher education, but Dynes says the UC still can't cover explosive enrollment and soaring inflation.
More than one-third of UC students will not have to pay the increase. That's because families making less than $60,000 a year are considered "needy" and eligible for grants.
