San Diego Unified teachers who were laid off during the summer are now being offered temporary positions in the district. KPBS Reporter Ana Tintocalis has more.
The district is offering more than half of the 200 laid off teachers one-year temporary teaching positions. The teachers will fill-in for people who are taking a leave of absence.
Superintendent Grier in an interview last week said it was unlikely any laid off teachers would be called back. He says there was no way to anticipate this change.
Grier: Because you don't know how many teachers are going to leave the profession and go into another line of work. You don't know how many teachers are going to request a leave of absence. There is just no way to know.
But teachers union president Camille Zombro says these temp jobs are a band-aid fix.
Zombro: This district is trying to spin this like they've done a good things and they've found positions for these teachers. These are temporary contracts. They're no commitment that these teachers will be employed even through the remainder of the school year.
The new jobs come just four days days before the official school year starts.
