The last big travel weekend of the summer is almost here, but the Automobile Club of Southern California says fewer people will be hitting the road this year.
AAA estimates about 2.9 million Californians will be traveling this Labor Day weekend. That’s down 13 percent from last year. But AAA’s Marie Montgomery says there’s more to it than a weak economy.
“The number of travelers is down this year. It’s not totally because of the economy. There’s actually a phenomenon taking place this year because of the late date of Labor Day,” she says.
Montgomery says many people have kids who are already back in school and can’t get away. But she says if you are going somewhere you’ll save money on gas. The average price is down 85 cents a gallon from last year. She says the price of plane tickets is also down about 17 percent, and that the top destination for Southern Californians this weekend is Las Vegas.
