Local small businesses will have something to smile about very soon, thanks to a $1 billion airport-expansion project.
The Green Build is the largest improvement project ever undertaken by the San Diego International Airport. Ten new gates, new roads, parking lots and concession facilities will be built by 2013.
The airport authority is inviting small-business contractors in the region to take part.
More than 50 bid requests will be issued in the next few weeks. Contracts will range from $20,000 to $30 million, for a total of $170 million.
Terry Johnson, program manager at the Airport Authority, invites contractors to attend meetings this week; attendance, he says is crucial to getting a piece of the pie.
“On November 17th, 18th and 19th, there’s a great opportunity for small businesses to find out about the opportunities that exist in the airport," he says, "and to meet with potential bidders to develop relationships that will get them the opportunity at the airport."
