S.D. Unified Taps New Board President

The San Diego Unified School Board has a new board president. Trustee Richard Barrera was tapped yesterday to lead the board of education.

Barrera is one of the newest trustees on the panel. He's been acting as the board's vice president over the past year. Fellow trustee John Evans nominated Barrera to take on the position.

"I think he's a very civil and polite and respectful person," Evans said. "I have seen that with other board members, his interactions with other board members, interactions with the administration, and with the students in the district. And I think that is a really key element for a person in this position."

The board president serves a one-year term. Barrera will replace current board president Sheila Jackson -- though she will remain as an acting trustee on the panel. Both Jackson and Barrera are backed by the teachers union.

San Diego Unified is the second largest school district in California.
