Snigdha Nandiparti was crowned 2011 Spelling Bee champ.
The 7th grader hails from Francis Parker School in San Diego. She studied more than 20,000 words for the big match.
Nearly 100 middle school students competed for the honor today. The competition took place at the Old Town Theater and lasted roughly four hours.
Kids tackled words like “iterative,” “corollary” and “taciturn.”
The winning word was “wastrel” meaning something rejected or discarded as useless or imperfect.
Nandiparti gets a Merriam Webster Dictionary, a $100 savings bond and one-year subscription to the Encyclopedia Britannica.
She will now proceed on to the Scripps National Spelling Bee, held annually in Washington, D.C.
This is not the first time the Nandiparti won a spelling bee competition. She was also clinched the top prize in the Long Beach Spelling Bee in 2009.
