New University of California president Janet Napolitano is laying out her agenda for the state's flagship public university system — starting with a tuition freeze for the 2014-15 school year.
"If we get tuition right, if we get access for transfers right, if we invest in our own research and change the game on energy consumption, the UC will demonstrate once again — to the nation and beyond — the fundamental and unique value of a world-class public research university," Napolitano said.
Napolitano spoke as president at her first Board of Regents meeting Wednesday in San Francisco.
She said the freeze will give the UC a chance to rethink its tuition structure — specifically, how to reduce volatility while maintaining the university's high education quality.
Gov. Jerry Brown also attended the meeting. He told regents that even though they might ask for a 10 percent increase in state funding next year, he'd only be open to a 5 percent increase.
