Del Mar Fairgrounds Offers $5 Million Coastal Settlement

A San Diego County fairground has agreed to make $5 million in environmental improvements through 2015 to settle claims that it violated state coastal laws for more than a decade.

Union Tribune San Diego said the board of the Del Mar Fairgrounds agreed this week to a 28-page cease-and-desist order from the California Coastal Commission.

The commission will consider the agreement next month.

The fairground borders a wetlands. State regulators claimed that among other things, the fairgrounds improperly placed a concert stage and a dirt parking lot in the area.

The wetlands recently underwent a $90 million restoration and is home to many species of plants, birds and fish.
