San Diegans are stepping out in the thousands to support tomorrow’s Creek to Bay Cleanup around the county.
So far there are 5,500 registered volunteers that will be participating in the 10th annual I Love a Clean San Diego cleanup.
With 88 sites, 30 coastal and 58 inland, volunteers will not only be removing trash, but also “beautifying” local neighborhoods. The service projects include planting native plants, pulling invasive plants, maintaining trails and painting over graffiti.
Executive Director Pauline Martinson said this is an opportunity for individuals to educate themselves on the harmful effects waste has on the environment.
“It’s a first hand experience… and I think it creates environmental stewardship and personal responsibility within kids and adults to really preserve San Diego and keep it the great place that it is,” she said.
This year’s event is expected to surpass the cleanup last year. In 2011, there were 5,350 volunteers in 75 sites that picked up 80 tons of debris.
The event kickoff will be on Friars Road in Fashion Valley where several city and county leaders will be speaking.
There will be 1,000 girl scouts volunteering as well, as part of their 100-year anniversary.
Martinson said it’s important for people to preserve their local areas and become familiar with the outdoor spaces close to them.
People still wanting to volunteer can visit their website to find a cleanup location near them. The event will also be accepting walk-ins.
