UCSD Medical Center hosts an educational forum today on how policy changes could increase breastfeeding in California. The state already has laws designed to encourage breastfeeding.
Unlike in some other states, women have the right to breastfeed in public in California. The state was one of the first to require employers to provide break time for women to pump breast milk.
Dr. Eyla Boies heads up the San Diego County Breastfeeding Coalition. She says while most women initiate breastfeeding, many stop after a short period of time.
"So this is where policies can really help moms right after delivery," Boies said. "And also support in those very critical first few weeks, from their doctors, lactation consultants, and others."
A report from UC Davis shows 59 percent of San Diego County mothers exclusively breastfeed their infants. Less than 10 percent do so in Imperial County.
