China's Restrictions on Foreigners Criticized

China issues sweeping guidelines this week prohibiting foreigners attending the Olympics from sleeping in parks, organizing political demonstrations or any other "activities that may harm national security and interests." A human rights group criticizes the rules as being vague and out of sync with China's promise of openness during the games.

Previously, China had begun tightening visa regulations, making it difficult for business travelers to enter China for short-term stays and plugging loopholes that allow freelance writers, musicians and foreign cultural entrepreneurs to stay in China in a sort of legal gray area.

The American Chamber of Commerce in Hong Kong and other business groups have complained to the Chinese government about the restrictions.
