New plays, a new festival that celebrates young artists and a popular San Diego Latin Jazz trumpeter teaming up with a ballet dancer for a special performance — these are just some of the events happening in San Diego this weekend.

Thursday on Midday Edition, KPBS Arts Calendar producer and editor Nina Garin discusses some of this weekend's top arts events.

• "The Metromaniacs" makes its West Coast premiere at the Old Globe. The production is a sexy comedy set in 18th century Paris where young people have gone crazy for poetry. The show runs through March 6.

• Evening of Jazz and Dance. Well-known San Diego Latin jazz trumpeter Gilbert Castellanos performs alongside San Diego ballet dancer Camille McPherson. Feb. 5-7 at the Lyceum Theatre at Horton Plaza.

New York-based artist Tara Donovan is having her first gallery show in San Diego. The exhibition runs from Saturday, Feb. 6 to Saturday, April 2, 2016.

The International Youth Arts Festival is a new event that showcases young performers from all over the county. There will be Bollywood dancing, opera singing, rare instrument music performances and more on Thursday, Feb. 4 at Swedenborg Hall in University Heights.
