If you're a big fan of awards shows like I am, you've no doubt heard of the infamous gift bags celebrities get for just showing up to the Golden Globe Awards and associated parties. These bags contain all sorts of expensive items - like jewelry, electronics, even gift certificates for surgery. According to Yahoo! OMG, the 2010 Golden Globe swag bags contained gifts worth more than $91,000.
There are also the lower-end gift bags, still worth about $500, and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (the organizers of the Golden Globes) are giving away $275,000 worth of those unclaimed goody bags from the 2011 awards to military families, according to the Hollywood Reporter. The HFPA donated the bags to a non-profit group called The Fisher House, which provides lodging for military families whose loved ones are hospitalized on base.
HFPA president Phillip Berk told the Hollywood Reporter:
Berk says he anticipates the annual SWAG donations to The Fisher House will be an ongoing event.
